The Burnsall Classic Fell Race followed the road race and, despite the forecast for rain and high winds, conditions remained fair for the 101 runners.

Runners got off to a quick start, with local expert Ted Mason (Wharfedale Harriers) leading from start to finish.

Michael Lomas put in a sterling performance and was first Harrier home in 20th, having just run the road race.

Ilkley Harrier Petra Bijsterveld ran in the 'Race The Train' event in Tywyn, mid Wales, which attracted a field of 834.

Now in its 33rd year and organised by Tywyn Rotary Club, it is centred around the Talyllyn Railway.

The main event is a 14-mile, multi-terrain race, where both runners and the train are started by the train's whistle.

The run consists of seven miles out to Abergynolwyn and seven miles back, this time on the other side of the track, which is definitely the harder half of the course.

The aim is to stay ahead of the train, which tends to take 1hr 47min, so beating it is only a possibility for the faster men and a handful of women.

However, it was just as much fun being overtaken by the train, which was carrying friends and family cheering the runners on.

Unfortunately the weather was not good, with heavy rain and gale-force winds of up to 50 miles an hour making conditions pretty difficult.

Petra had an excellent race and finished in 2hr 32min. Race winner Paul Green (Sale Harriers) clocked 1hr 28min 14sec.

Another interesting race in Wales last weekend was the Run To The Castle Ultra, a 42-mile event to Harlech Castle from Aberdovey along the Welsh coastal path.

Runners started on the beach in gale-force winds, and the runners then got a good soaking along Tywyn 'prom'.

After this, it was a constant battle against the wind, with some steep hills in the first half, while good map-reading skills were also required.

Neil and Alison Bloor ran well to finish 36th and 37th out of a field of 50, with the event raising money for CRY (cardiac risk in the young). Race winner was Julian Ayres in 6hr 42min.

The Fifth English Fell Championship Race, the Pendle Three Peaks, which covered 16km and involved 870 metrtes of climbing, also took place on Saturday, with two Harriers entered.

Despite wet and windy conditions, Jack Wood continued his great form to finish 13th out of 229 in 80:54 amid tough competition. Alison Weston finished in 116:51 as the 39th lady out of 77.

Winners were Sam Tosh (Rossendale) in 77:51 and Sharon Taylor (Helm Hill) in 94:06.
