OLD Modernians have been elected to the Aire-Wharfe League for next season.

The Cookridge-based club, who were eighth in Wetherby League Division One in 2014, received 27 votes at the Aire-Wharfe Council meeting on Tuesday at Otley Rugby Union Club.

This tally that was only bettered by Alwoodley, who were re-elected with 31 votes after finishing second-from-bottom in Division Two.

However, Woodhouse – the other club seeking re-election after finishing bottom – only gained six votes, which was not enough for re-election.

St Chad's Broomfield, who were fifth in Wetherby League Division One in 2014, received one vote, while Central Yorkshire League club East Leeds, who were bottom of their Championship Division this season, received no votes.

This is the third time that Cookridge-based Old Mods have applied to join the Aire-Wharfe League, and the second time they have been successful.

They were voted in in 2000 after the demise of the Leeds League but turned the opportunity down after their players had second thoughts.

They also applied in 2012 but failed to gain sufficient votes.

Meanwhile, Beckwithshaw's resolution to play on a bank holiday Monday – as happened this year due to the Tour de France – as a regular thing was defeated.

The club's reasoning was that by playing on the Monday it would free up a Saturday halfway through in the season where players could plan a holiday without missing a match.

Otley seconded the proposal but it was defeated 25-8.

However, Skipton's resolution that advertising be allowed on stumps as an extra form of revenue was passed 26-2.

League secretary Dave Alred added that the league were constantly monitoring the points system and would come up with proposals for the 2016 season after listening to suggestions from clubs as well as any that came from the league's management committee.
