A CHARITY dinner has raised over £4,800 for Airedale Hospital’s neo-natal unit to help refurbish its parent facilities.

Former Keighley Mayor, Councillor Javaid Akhtar, chose the neo-natal unit at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust to be the beneficiary of the town mayor's charitable trust during his term of office.

The unit provides care for babies who are ill or premature. It provides 12 cots – including three for intensive care – for babies born at 27 weeks gestation or more.

The successful event, which attracted about 100 people, included an auction and raffle supported by local traders who donated prizes ranging from free haircuts to gift vouchers.

Teresa Mamwell, ward co-ordinator on the neo-natal unit, said: “We're thankful to everyone who contributed towards this event.

"We'll be using the money to redecorate our parent facilities, including two bedrooms and a sitting area.

"The comfort of parents during this stressful time is extremely important to us – this will help us in providing further, excellent care.”

At the presentation of a cheque for £4,860, Cllr Akhtar said: “One of my main goals has been to help the local community as much as possible – anything we can give to the hospital is a huge help, so the support we've seen is greatly appreciated.

“I want to thank all the traders who donated prizes, the staff at Keighley Town Council and the board of the mayor’s charitable trust.”
