A COUPLE who met in Italy during World War Two have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Ken and Clara Shaw, of Apperley Bridge, were married in Naples on August 23, 1945. They had met in the southern Italian city - where Clara was born - earlier the same year.

Buttershaw-born Ken was a photographer in the army and had moved with his unit from north Africa to Naples, where Clara was working as a secretary.

After a honeymoon in Rome, the couple came to Bradford and lived in Wibsey. They moved to Buttershaw and back to Wibsey, before settling in Apperley Bridge in the 1990s.

Now 95, Ken was also a photographer for Fields Printers and in his spare time loved photography and painting. He also studied at Bradford College of Art. Clara, 93, worked for the Italian consulate and also taught Italian at evening and private classes.

The couple's son Rod, 64, said his mum was very active in the Italian community in Bradford.

Ken and Clara also have a daughter, 67-year-old Mariapia, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Rod said the family would be marking the occasion with a quiet family celebration.
