IT'S a long way from Jam and Jerusalem for a newly-formed WI group in Ilkley.

Members of Ilkley BlueBelles are just as likely to be learning circus skills and dry land synchronised swimming as they are to be baking and sewing. That's when they're not hula hooping, mixing cocktails or learning sign language.

The new group, which was set up in December, prides itself on being "a modern WI with traditional values".

And as the national WI celebrates its centenary, the BlueBelles feel they have created a contemporary group that maintains its traditional basis.

With an emphasis on fun, friendship and learning new skills, the group has gone from strength to strength.

Starting out with five members, it now has 55 and has outgrown its first venue. It now meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm at The Vaults.

The group was set up by its president, Gillian Murgatroyd, who put a post on Facebook asking if anyone wanted to start a WI branch. Since then, she has been staggered by how well it has taken off.

"It was something I really wanted to do, so I knew there would be some people like me," she said. "But at the back of my mind, I thought there might just be ten of us. But the response has been amazing."

"It is a modern WI with traditional values," she added. "A lot of people hear about the WI and think it is going to be stuffy, but we do modern activities."

She said members enjoyed fun sessions, such as cocktail making and synchronised swimming, as well as traditional pursuits more usually associated with the WI.

While there might be a common belief the organisation tends to attract only older ladies, this certainly isn't true of the BlueBelles.

"I am in my mid-30s and most of the ladies are a similar age to me," Gillian said.

"Most members are in their 30s and 40s, but we do have 50s, 60s and perhaps even 70s. The young and young at heart are all welcome."

She added: "Most members work and many are mums. We have teachers, lab managers, business owners, full time mums, nurses – a good mix."

Gillian is supported by group secretary, Sara Scott, and treasurer, Helen Harland, and says: "Ilkley BlueBelles wouldn't be here without them."

She also praised Ilkley Moor Vaults for their enthusiasm and help when a new venue was needed. The BlueBelles have recently posed for a photoshoot with photographer Suzy Mitchell, whom Gillian described as "very supportive and talented".

The group is keen to champion local businesses and also encourages skills-swapping among members.

Anyone who wants to get involved can contact the group at the ilkleybluebelleswi.com website or just turn up to a meeting.

There is an annual WI subscription of £36, and it costs £4 for anyone wanting to try out a meeting before committing.
