Ilkley butcher Joe Smith has sliced his way through the opposition to win a prize for the quality of his work.

Joe, 21, an assistant shop manager at Lishman's butchers, was given two hours to butcher various meat products to produce the best results and to display them as attractively as possible.

He was working in competition with several other butchers and two judges decided his display was the most impressive.

It meant that Joe, who has been with Lishman's since joining as an apprentice at 17, walked away with a trophy, certificate, a new set of butchery knives and £100 in vouchers.

It is not the first time his butchery skills have won him awards and he said: "We were given two hours to butcher a shoulder of pork, two chickens, a knuckle of beef and a lamb shoulder, making as many products as possible, while making sure the meat was displayed nicely."

The competition was organised by Castleford based meat wholesalers Dalziel and Joe, who lives in Oakworth, was in competition with six other butchers.
